Mineral Surveying Associates

Mineral Surveying Associates
Mineral Surveying Associates was established in 2017 as a Joint Venture between  Chartered Minerals Surveyors Tim Troman and Mick Hughes to promote business solutions to minerals and renewable energy related needs. Mick Hughes retired from professional practice in 2019. We have experience across all UK natural construction materials, including sand & gravel, crushed rock, shales, clays and building stone, and industrial minerals such as fluorspar and potash.  All of our members have over 30 years’ experience in minerals property, including mineral estate management, mineral valuation, and mineral development. All appointments, instructions and provision of services are provided directly by one of the MSA member firms in a conventional client–adviser relationship.  The Mineral Surveying Associates logo is the mark of our Joint Venture, offering professional services through our member firms.

Tim Troman

Tim is a Chartered Mineral Surveyor with over 30 year's experience in the minerals industry, formerly based at Wardell Armstrong’s Newcastle upon Tyne office.  Tim’s principle role has been as a Minerals Agent for land owning clients, and providing advice on minerals estates matters, but has also carried out work for regulatory authorities and industry.  For the majority of that time Tim was closely associated with the management and development of the minerals portfolio of the Church Commissioners for England, one of the largest and longest developed minerals estates in the UK.

Tim’s experience includes mineral resource appraisals, mineral valuations, the negotiation of minerals and landfill agreements, minerals development, advice on minerals and mining law, and supervision of the administration of mineral rent and royalty accounts.  Tim has given evidence to the Parliamentary Justice Select Committee on manorial rights issues.  Specialisms include: Minerals estate management, minerals valuations (RICS Registered Valuer), minerals rent reviews, minerals resource appraisals, and minerals ownership issues (including ex-copyhold & manorial rights), and compensation for minerals sterilised.

In 2006, Tim, collaborating with Tarmac, Hanson Aggregates, and the Valuation Office Agency, approached Northumbria University to establish a distance learning MSc in Mineral Surveying.  Involving thirteen other minerals industry professionals across both the public and private sector to write the module papers, the course ran for six years providing the opportunity for a number of new Chartered Mineral Surveyors to enter the profession.

In 2014 Tim was pleased to collaborate with Peter Vincent and Gareth Powell in the publication of the Mineral Surveyors Handbook.  Tim continues to take an interest in promoting and expanding the profession, and has over a long career been a member of RICS committees and panels both nationally and locally.

In 2017 Tim launched Mineral Surveying Associates with Mick Hughes to promote mineral surveying services on behalf of our independent member firms.

Following Mick's retirement, Tim incorporated Mineral Surveying Associates Ltd in 2019, and is currently the sole Director.
